A thrilling, page-turning debut about a twisted killer and a broken cop—both with nothing to lose.
Paul Czarcik, the longest-tenured detective in the Illinois Bureau of Judicial Enforcement, puts the rest of the team to shame. Ruthless and riddled with vices, Czarcik always gets his man. And fast. Until now…
A double slaying isn’t the open-and-shut case of urban crime he’s used to. Connecting it to a high-profile Texas judge, Czarcik realizes something bigger is going on. It’s the work of a serial killer for whom Chicago is just the beginning. Now he’s inviting Czarcik to play catch-me-if-you-can on a cross-country murder spree.
Going rogue, Czarcik accepts the challenge. But as the bodies pile up, he must come to grips with the fact that nothing—not the killer, the victims, or the rules—is what it seems in this bloody game of cat and mouse.

Rain will come is a compelling debut from the author Thomas Holgate. This book will keep you on the edge of your seats with its twists and cat and mouse chase between the serial killer and the detective. The story is different from other serial killer mysteries I have read. The plot and characters in this story were compelling in their presence and left me wanting to finish it as soon as possible. The book is amazing and definitely worth reading.
Paul Czarcik is one of our central characters. He plays the role of the Detective from the Illinois Bureau of Judicial Enforcement. He is in the late fifties and a stickler to his routine and regimen. He is as flawed as a man van be. He is driven, dedicated and passionate about his job. Being a cop is his dream job. He loves the thrills and adrenaline the job gives him. He is intuitive, smart and cocky of his abilities as a problem solver. He is arrogant and narcissistic. Czarcik loves drinking heavily, snorting coke and spending his evenings in cheap motels with escorts. Coke and alcohol makes him more focused to find the clues in his cases. His vices and his addiction to them makes him the most unconventional and unorthodox detectives. He is lonely and seeks companionship and conversations from the escorts. Every trait of his character makes him the deeply flawed and an interesting character.
The cat and mouse game played by the serial killer with the detective takes the center stage in this book. The way the serial killer plays with the detective and takes him along the ride on the murder trail is fascinating and riveting. The Serial killer in this book is so different that you find yourself wanting to figure out the reason for his behavior. The serial killer with his unconventional methods and surprise elements makes the story captivating. Readers will find themselves wanting to support him and not support him at the same time. The constant push and pull one would experience towards this character is what makes this plot stand out differently.
The details of each murder are drawn so vividly that its image lasts a long time on our minds leaving us horrified and disgusted. I found the details to be disturbing and gruesome. This is what makes the story so spine-chilling and gut-churning. The way the story is woven with the details is what makes it un-put-down-able. I couldn’t put the book down and I didn’t know if I would be able to continue at the same time. The murders and the killings are done differently from one another. The creativity and the planning the killer takes to complete each of the tasks he undertakes is what makes this story stand out for me. Every scene will make you question your own moral compass and what sort justice should be delivered to the worst of evil.
The book is riveting in its delivery and is definitely a must-read for all those who love the serial killer plot lines. The story was singular with its unique plot and unconventional characters. The pacing was also perfect with the right amount of speed to keep you hooked and enough details to make you want to continue. This story left me wanting to equally stop and continue reading to find out what happens. The element of suspense to make us curious about the story-line ensured brilliant execution of the plot. This book will leave you horrified, scared and shocked.
MY THOUGHTS :
I found this book to be an excellent read for the thriller/mystery/crime genre. I definitely recommend the book to all who enjoy a good crime novel. The characters were fascinating and brought forward unique aspects to the book. The plot was compelling and made me want to read. The singular bond between the central characters however unconventional it maybe will leave the readers wanting to see the novel through.
I loved how the author brought forward a different combo of the serial killer-detective that the story took an entirely different path of its own. The way the characters had more in common and how the detective grapples with the information was captivating. The commonality in their natures Vs the law was an interesting perspective. The story makes us ask important questions about morality, moral compass and our idea of justice. The questions are difficult and the answers are complicated.
I personally don’t and cannot endorse vigilante justice. I believe in letting the law and officials handle them. Yet I found myself wanting people to pay for their crimes in this book. The need for justice to be served to those who wronged the innocent in the worst form of evil made it difficult to stand with the law. What would you do if the justice system failed and every evil in this world was given free rein due to the flaws in the system? I didn’t know whether to be elated and feel triumph for the serial killer doling out justice for those who cannot speak. I was horrified and fascinated at the same time making it an unforgettable read.
Rain will come by Thomas Holgate is a gripping, terrifying thriller all James Patterson fans should check out. The book is fascinating and horrifying with explicit details and imagery that will leave your gut churning. Definitely check this book out if you can handle gruesome violence and graphic details. If you are in the mood for a dark thriller, then Rain will come is the book for you.
